Steels having carbon as the major alloying element are called as carbon steels. They contain up to 1.2% manganese and 0.4% silicon. The residual elements such as copper, molybdenum, aluminium, chromium and nickel are also present in these steels. AISI 1017 carbon steel is a medium-low carbon steel, which has good welding property and slightly better machinability, compared to the lower carbon steels. It is soft and can be strengthened during cold working and drawing or forming.
